We completed our scheduled August maintenance for both Hyak Klone, Tillicum, and Kopah.

Hyak Klone β€” Extended Maintenance

August 11–12, 2026

Klone underwent an extended maintenance window to complete the transition to a new node provisioning system (Warewulf). This work brings Klone's management infrastructure more closely in line with Tillicum, allowing us to use more consistent tools and processes across the two clusters.

The maintenance also included operating system and security updates, updates to cluster software and drivers, and several administrative infrastructure changes.

Klone was brought back into service following the maintenance on August 12.

Important Storage Reminder for Hyak Klone

Hyak Klone does not provide backup, persistent storage, or archival storage. All data on Klone exists as a single copy and is therefore vulnerable to loss due to hardware failure, filesystem issues, facility damage, or natural disasters. Users are solely responsible for transferring important results to external systems (for example, Kopah S3 or Lolo Archive) during the course of their project if persistent or long-term storage is required. Retaining long-term or archival data on Klone is against administrative guidance.

Tillicum β€” Regular Maintenance

August 18, 2026

Tillicum's scheduled monthly maintenance was completed today. The work included operating system and security updates, updates to networking and storage software, and updates to cluster management and scheduling infrastructure.

Tillicum is now back in service.

Looking Ahead

Our next maintenance window is scheduled for Tuesday September 8, but due to the Labor Day holiday, maintenance may occur on a different date. We will keep you posted via our user mailing lists.
